Creating Topo with Location Marker and Cursor Location Shown in Decimal Degrees
Note: It may be helpful to print these instructions so that you may have them readily accessible.
Note: Do not interrupt while whirlagig is turning from the previous step.
Note: It may take up to one minute (1:00) to load initial map. Actual example times required for other steps: (m:ss)
To convert pointer coordinates to decimal degrees (Recommended) (0:07)
1. Left bottom: Click "Options"
2. Expand popup window.
3. Mouseover Coordinate Format: Select "Decimal Degrees".
4. Click "Apply Changes".
To obtain topo map (Recommended) (0:07 w/o refresh, 0:29 w/refresh)
1. Drag right slider bar down.
2. Click "Topographic Maps"
3. Click "USGS QUADRANGLES"
4. Click "USGS Raster Graphics ...
5. Right bottom: Click "Refresh Required". [5. may be skipped if continuing to place marker, following.]
To place marker on site location. (Recommended) (1:16)
1. Select and copy latitude from url box.
2. Click "Find Place".
3. Click "Point (Longitude-Latitude...)
3. Click and hold on blue top bar of "Zoom to a Point" box, and drag it down slightly until url box is visible.
4. Paste latitude into "Latitude" box.
6. Select and copy longitude from url box [Be sure to include minus sign]
7. Click on "Find Place".
8. Click on "Back" arrow of "Zoom to Point" box.
9. Paste longitude into longitude box.
10. Select "Zoom level" ["Local" is closest, "Neighborhood" is 2nd closest, "City" is 3rd closest].
11. Click on "Zoom to Point".
To change scale (0:53)
1. Closest, "Local", 1:24k topo
2. 2nd closest, "Neighborhood", 1:24k
3. 3rd closest, "City", 1:100k
4. 4th closest, "Region", 1:250k
5. It is recommended not to go beyond "Region" scale for use with GG.
To remove Overview Map (upper left) (0:00)
1. Click "Overview" (upper left)
Determining Coordinates for New Location using National Map
1. Convert pointer to decimal degrees (above)
2. Positon pointer (cursor) on new location.
3. a. Record coordinates as shown in lower left corner of screen.
b. Alternate method if PrintScreen s/w is installed: select screen area including both the cursor location and the coordinates in lower left corner of screen.
4. Put the coordinates (or paste the PrtScr image) into an email addressed to John Robertson.
